Applus+ supervises construction of long-distance natural gas pipeline in Texas

17/07/2019

Through its RTD brand, Applus+ in the United States has successfully completed the contract to inspect the Gulf Coast Express Pipeline (GCX) project, a joint venture between subsidiaries and affiliates of Kinder Morgan, DCP Midstream and Targa Resources Corp, to bring natural gas from the Permian Basin area in West Texas to the Gulf of Mexico Coast. The GCX Mainline portion of the project consists of approximately 447.5 miles of 42-inch pipeline, with Applus+ inspecting all welds along 267 miles of the construction of spreads 4 and 5.

Applus+ inspection methods and technologies used in the project include RotoScan (a system to detect and measure welding imperfections within the weld and associated heat-affected zones), RayScan (which consists of real-time digital radiographic inspection systems) and conventional radiographic testing (RT).

From an early stage, the project management team worked with the client contractor and owner to clearly define the project plan and specifications. Large projects such as this one need to maintain consistent top-down communication in order to ensure the highest levels of safety and quality.

To date, Applus+ has successfully completed 95% of the mainline operations, with very positive client feedback. Once the entire scope of work is complete, management will meet with the client contractor for a close-out meeting. In this project, as in others, Applus+ aims to create a strong partnership, built on a foundation of integrity, honesty and transparency, in order to continue delivering many successful projects in the years to come.
