Inaugural fire safety management certification programme for tunnel control centre operators

20/03/2019

This coming 9th and 10th April, Applus+ is running its first tunnel operator training event, leading to individual certification. The training includes a series of practical exercises and drills involving real fire in the Applus+ TST testing tunnel.

Applus+ has developed a new certification programme for tunnel sector professionals. The programme is aimed at control centre operators with a view to ensuring that they have the requisite knowledge and practical experience to manage fires in their facilities.

This individual certification gives operators official recognition of their technical competencies in the field of tunnel fire safety management. The scheme provides a tunnel management company’s clients and stakeholders with greater transparency and assurances, since the company’s employees have been certified by an independent, specialist fire safety body such as Applus+.

To achieve certification, operators must undertake a two-day training programme comprising both theoretical modules on how tunnel fires evolve and three practical exercises inside the Applus+ TST fire tunnel in Siero, Asturias (Spain).
    • Test demonstration with real fire:
      • From inside the tunnel: evacuation exercises
      • From the control room: smoke behaviour
    • Test demonstration with white smoke from inside the tunnel
    • Practical training in fire extinction
The inaugural training programme will take place on 9th and 10th April.
