Knowing a material's reaction to fire allows us to foresee its behavior in a fire: how it will start, evolve and spread the combustion. To evaluate materials' reaction to fire and classify them according to their performance you need to determine their levels of flammability, combustibility, smoke toxicity and combustion heat, among others.
Manufacturers of products which may be exposed to a possible fire should develop materials that are less vulnerable to fire to ensure the safety of their applications in means of transportation, buildings or any other environment where there is a risk of fire. The applicable legislation varies according to the sector and the product's use.
