New CE Marking for fabric fire curtains

25/07/2018
CE marking will be obligatory from 2019 for fabric fire safety curtains used like doors
The European Commission has approved CE marking for fabric fire-safety barriers, also called operable fire curtains, when they are employed in similar uses to fire doors and industrial doors. The new CE mark will apply to fabric fire curtains used in the construction sector as a fire safety enclosure measure, with the aim of preventing the spread of fire by means of compartmentalisation.

In order to obtain the CE mark, fire curtains must pass the initial fire resistance tests in the EN 1634-1:2010 standard “Fire Resistance Tests For Doors, Shutters And Openable Windows”.
To extend the results of the tests to other products in the same range, manufacturers can proceed to carry out an evaluation under the rules defined in the EXAP EN 15269-11:2018 standard “Fire resistance for operable fabric curtains”.

From now on, in order to gain access to the EU market as doors, fire curtains will need to pass complementary durability and mechanical tests applicable to these products. Furthermore, the process to obtain the CE mark includes an initial control audit of the manufacturing environment, as well as annual inspections in order to renew the CE certification.
